Harbor Light Hat: A Covering for the Journey

There is something timeless about a hat by the sea.

Perhaps it’s the way it shades our eyes from the midday sun, or the way it reminds us to slow down and notice the beauty around us—the rhythm of the waves, the warmth of the sand beneath our feet, and the gentle breeze carrying the scent of saltwater.

The newest addition to the Common Threads Coastal Collection, the Harbor Light Hat, was inspired by those peaceful moments along the shoreline. Crocheted in a warm golden hue reminiscent of sunlit dunes and weathered beach grass, this hat is designed to be both practical and beautiful—a faithful companion for beach walks, farmers markets, garden afternoons, and quiet moments of reflection.

The Harbor Light Hat began as a summer project inspired by the beautiful Caribbean Breeze Sun Hat pattern by MJ’s Off the Hook Designs. Drawn to its classic silhouette and practical brim, I chose a warm golden color that reminded me of sunlit dunes, sea oats, and the gentle glow of a harbor light at day’s end. To make the hat uniquely my own, I added a soft coastal-blue crocheted band that serves a dual purpose. When attached beneath the brim, it becomes a functional chin strap to help keep the hat secure on breezy beach walks and boat rides. When detached, the same piece transforms into a coordinating crocheted headband, offering a second way to wear and enjoy the design.

I love projects that blend beauty and practicality, and this simple feature embodies the spirit of Common Threads. Like many handmade items, the Harbor Light Hat is designed to serve more than one purpose. The removable band offers flexibility for changing weather, travel, and everyday wear while adding a touch of coastal color that echoes the blues of the sea and sky.

The name Harbor Light brings to mind the guiding lights that welcome sailors home. Throughout history, harbor lights have offered direction, safety, and reassurance in changing conditions. In much the same way, the women described in Proverbs 31 provide care, wisdom, and shelter for those entrusted to them.

“She makes coverings for herself…” — Proverbs 31:22

The Proverbs 31 woman is thoughtful in her work. She creates with wisdom, preparing for the needs of daily life. The Harbor Light Hat reflects that same spirit of intentional making. Its removable crocheted band is a small detail, yet it adds both beauty and function—a reminder that the most meaningful handmade items are often those that thoughtfully meet the needs of the people who use them.

As makers, we continue that tradition every time we pick up our hooks and needles. We create coverings that bring comfort, protection, and beauty into everyday life. A crocheted hat may seem like a small thing, but it represents time, care, creativity, and skill. It is a reminder that handmade items carry something more than function—they carry the love and attention of the maker.

The Harbor Light Hat celebrates this spirit of mindful making. Each stitch becomes part of a covering that serves a purpose while inviting us to embrace the simple joys of coastal living.

As you wear or make your Harbor Light Hat, may it remind you to look for the lights that guide your own journey. May it encourage you to create with intention, serve with generosity, and find beauty in the ordinary moments that often become our most treasured memories.

With gratitude,

Vicki
