A Simple Finishing Touch for Handmade Fall Pumpkins

There is something especially satisfying about making pumpkins for fall. They bring that cozy, handmade feeling I love about the season—the colors, textures, gardens, changing light, and little reminders that it is time to gather in.

But after making more than a few crocheted pumpkins, I kept running into the same question:

What should I use for the stem?

Cinnamon sticks are charming, but when you are making several pumpkins, they can get expensive. I also wanted something that looked a little more like the real pumpkin stems I see when I harvest pumpkins from my own garden—slightly crooked, textured, imperfect, and dried by the end of the growing season.

So I started crocheting them.

Why I Love This Crochet Pumpkin Stem

My favorite version is wonderfully simple. It works up quickly, uses only a tiny amount of yarn, and can be shaped so that no two stems look exactly alike.

A warm brown, caramel, tan, or muted olive yarn gives it that dried-from-the-garden appearance. I especially like allowing the stem to bend slightly rather than making it perfectly straight. That little imperfection is what makes it feel real.

And because it uses leftover yarn, it is a lovely scrap-busting detail—no need to buy a separate cinnamon stick or wooden stem for every pumpkin.

A Little Common Threads Wisdom

One of the things I love most about fiber arts is that even the smallest detail can transform something we have made.

A pumpkin stem may seem insignificant, but without it, the pumpkin isn’t quite finished.

There is a lesson tucked into that.

Our creative lives are made up of small things: one stitch, one row, one thoughtful detail, one scrap of yarn put to good use. We don’t always need something expensive or elaborate to make something beautiful. Sometimes what we already have in our hands is enough.
